Happy Things

Here are a few things that have made me happy of late:

I don't mind a dusting of snow when it makes things look pretty.

Plus, the dark-eyed juncos come back in the winter.

It's not spring yet, but look! Things are blooming in my house!

A peace plant from a friend.

A very showy amaryllis from my cousin.

I inherited this violet from my mother. She had plants that were over thirty years old, but I think this one is just pushing fifteen.

It had a baby last year which I rooted and now it's blooming as well!

I have an office!
When Mom moved in we converted a big closet downstairs into a room for Three. We just moved him back upstairs so I claimed the closet. I basically took a bunch of girly things and put them all in one room.

Plus a bed for Erin when she comes to stay.

I only need a table to type.

And a door. Which I have marked appropriately.

We'll see if it manages to keep tough guys like these Brooklyn Nets fans out of my space.

My aunt sent me this picture.

I think I'm about 20.
I hung it on the fridge and the boys' comments have been priceless. They don't understand why their father, who looked like this at the time,

ever dated me. We're not sure either, but it's made me happiest of all.

What's making you smile?

  1. I love your door sign.

You should tell your boys that you look quite fierce (and that's a good thing) and powerful in that picture. Kudos to The Captain for being wise & brave enough to approach you.

I'm not much of an NBA fan, but the Nets have my favorite PG in Deron Williams. (If they're interested, tell your boys to Google Deron and the Illinois-Arizona game. They don't make them too much tougher.

    1. Yes, I'm quite confident in my posh thrift store wear. When I look at old pictures I sort of carbon date my age by my hairstyle. It's tougher with The Captain because he's had the same look for the 28 years I've known him. The Captain has always known who he is, and he figured me out pretty quick despite the foxy armor.

I actually enjoy watching basketball. I'm a fan of the timed sports. Half our vacation in Yellowstone this past summer was spent trying to find wi-fi so Two and Three could follow the hoopla associated with the trade for Deron Williams! The Captain and I harken back to the time when there was only one basketball squad in the city--that's right, the one and only New York Knickerbockers--so it's been an interesting season in our house.

  2. Love your pictures, Megan! I totally get why the Captain dated you--and stayed, by the way.

I love my office too--the tiniest room upstairs and farthest away from the furnace, so I have to have a space heater to work in there in winter. But it's cozy and very Frenchy and totally me, so it's grand!

    1. I used to write at the kitchen table. I didn't mind it because the view out the windows is lovely, but boy does my kitchen get cold in the winter! The office is an interior room so it's always toasty. I keep finding things I want to put in there because it's just for me!

P.S. Dragonflies are my favorite insect.

  3. I live with my mom. She's going out of town for a week and I'm going to take off work one shift. The timing will give me 4 days in a row off, home, alone.
    Happy, happy dance!

    1. As someone who is never truly alone in this house (nine residents in and out all day) I feel your joy, and join in your dance!

  4. Oh, I adore your space and all of its feminine finery. And the sign on the door is priceless. I'm sensing a masterpiece in the making. Happy typing. : )

    1. I'm sensing an over-decorated room in the making. Now when I see a store circular I want to buy girly things for the room (damn you, Pier 1 and your pretty bird prints!)

My new mantra is...Less decorating, more typing.

  5. Love the door sign it is so you (i guess you figured a cartoon penis with an "x" through it would be tacky)

Also, your legs look hot in that picture. You were like some fierce glamazon with mile long legs in black tights. When I was thin enough to dress like that I looked like a CHILD unfortunately.

    1. I would have drawn that picture except I feel like penises are already well represented here.

The legs are an optical illusion. It's the magic of black stockings, baby, because I'm only 5'2'', and most of that is torso.

  6. Ohgawd I love these pictures, all of them!

Karen just got a desk and now you have a room. So happy-making, for sure.

    1. Ooo, I'll have to go see Karen's desk! It was a fun project to finish after living in limbo for so many months.

  7. Dude. I'm a chick and I would've dated you.

Also, love the violet, adore the quilt on the daybed, and I need me one of those signs for my door. Wait. I don't have a door. Ah well, something to aspire to, eh?

    1. And in college, I would have dated you, too! I was very open-minded.

The flowers are more purple than they look in the photo, and very velvety. And more blooms are getting ready to burst. Yay!

I got the quilt for Mom when she had to move into a hospital bed. Her queen sized quilt was lovely, so we tried to get something similar for her to mask the ugly bed. I figured it was a good thing to have some of her energy in the room with me.

I bought that sign three years ago in the dollar store and have been waiting ever since to use it. Don't give up your door dream!

  8. Love the pics of your family. And I'm so happy you have what Woolf called: A room of her own! Yay!!!! You deserve it.

    1. Two and Three are trying to look tough but One's not buying it. It's the first time I've posted recent pictures of them and it gave me pause until I realized they've been plastering themselves all over the internet for years. Kids today...

It is my own room although my M.I.L hides in there every once in a while because it's so peaceful. I'm fine with sharing the girly.
